UFC 109 took place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and for the first time in UFC history, featured two active UFC Hall of Fame fighters in Randy "The Natural" Couture and Mark "The Hammer" Coleman. In the co-main event, Chael Sonnen took on Nate "The Great" Marquardt in a battle for #1 contender in the middleweight division.
The first televised portion of UFC 109 aired on Spike TV and featured a clash of lightweights when Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard took on Ronys Torres. Torres seemed to be in control of the first round, but could never hold Guillard down. Melvin pressured Torres in round two and landed a devastating knee. The third round was much closer towards the end of the round Guillard mounted Torres and landed devastating punches, securing himself a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Next up was lightweights Mac Danzig vs Justin Buchholz. Buchholz in the first round landed some powerful combinations and got the better of Danzig. Rounds two and three saw Danzig utilizing his sharp grappling skills on Buchholz, but could not finish him. Mac Danzig defeated Justin Buchholz by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
In the first fight on the pay-per-view portion of the card Matt Serra made short work of Frank Trigg. Serra sent Trigg violently to the canvas with a right hand and followed up with punches earning himself a win by knock out via punches at 2:23 in round one.
In middleweight action, Demian Maia took on Dan Miller and showed displayed his new found striking. The first two rounds saw Maia utilizing solid counter right and left hands on Miller. Anytime Maia could secure the takedown on Miller, Miller proved to be difficult to hold down and scrambled to his feet. The third and final round saw much more grappling from Maia, but Miller was not afraid and even attempted a triangle choke on the brazilian jiu jitsu ace Maia. Demian Maia wins via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
Paulo Thiago solidified himself as one of the top welterweights in the division after facing Mike Swick. Thiago spent much of round one outstriking Swick and landed devastating leg kicks but to Swick's credit he scored a takedown towards the end of the round. The second round saw Thiago catching Swick with a right hook, following with a left hook, and ended up finishing Swick with a D'arce choke at 1:54.
In what many consider a huge upset, Chael Sonnen defeated Nate Marquardt. Sonnen spent the majority of the fight scoring takedown after takedown, and landing some devastating ground and pound, however Marquardt opened a cut on Sonnen's forehead with an razor sharp elbow off his back. The third round saw Marquardt finally mount some more offense when he was able to land a knee on Sonnen, followed by a guillotine, and he even ended on top of Sonnen in north south position, but Marquardt could not finish the fight. Chael Sonnen won via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
In a battle of legendary UFC champions, Randy Couture got the job done against Mark Coleman. From round one, Randy showed beautiful hand combinations and hurt Coleman on several occasions, and Couture spent a lot of time dirty boxing Coleman. Round two started to be much of the same until Couture took Coleman down, took Coleman's back, and then Couture submitted Coleman with a rear-naked choke at 1:09 of the second round.

really only thing good about this event is chael sonnen. next 4 him should b winner of the silva vitor belfort fight. future champ is chael sonnen.
